Wine Tasting: Wines of Domaine Rolly-Gassman (2nd May 2000)

A small tasting accompanied by several dishes. The Pinot Blanc and Riesling showed far more on their own, while the Auxerois and the Gewurztraminer made the best matches with food. These wines are only released when mature.

1. 1996 Rolly-Gassman Pinot Blanc

2nd May 2000 Alsace Table White

Bright, very pale. Clean fruit on the nose with a nice mineral undercurrent. Medium bodied and medium dry, with fresh mouthfilling fruit, good balance and a long citrussy finish. Very attractive, drink now.

2. 1993 Rolly-Gassman Auxerrois

2nd May 2000 Alsace Table White

Slightly deeper in colour, with a muted but fresh nose showing traces of melon and minerals. Full bodied with sweet, upfront melon and baked apple flavours, nicely judged acidity and a long fruit and mineral finish. Gorgeous stuff, drink now. Combines superbly with a large range of foods too.

3. 1997 Rolly-Gassman Riesling

2nd May 2000 Alsace Table White

Bright, very pale. Attractive, fresh nose of grapefruit, straw and peaches. Medium bodied and dry, with flavours of straw and orange peel, soft acidity and a balanced, if slightly thin, finish. Good - but a bit too stark for many of the dishes.

4. 1991 Rolly-Gassman Gewurztraminer 'Oberer Weingarten'

2nd May 2000 Alsace Table White

Bright, pale gold with a touch of green. Spicy, tropical, mango and linseed oil nose - very appealing. Full bodied, luscious, mouthfilling, with sweet lychees, minerals, alcohol and a long, fat finish. Superb now, and a star combination with most dishes.
